Vapour Degreasing Made Simple
Rated for its effectiveness against oils and grease, vapour degreasing is a process that is closely related to water-based degreasing but uses non-flammable solvent instead of detergents in water.
Taking place in a twin slump tank, vapour degreasing is made up of two stages (minimum), rinse and vapour. The simplicity of the process is a major contributing factor to its success as it is known as a very effective and reliable cleaning method.
Rinse Process
Components and parts start off being loaded into a basket. The basket is moved above the first of the sump tanks containing solvent. Heated to a temperature to warm the solvent but not boil it, the basket is dipped into the solvent.
The solvent is able to coat all the exposed surfaces of the components, practical to wash the initial particles and contaminants away.
During this stage, additional features are frequently included such as ultrasonic generators which would increase the agitation of the solvent whilst the component is immersed for a more thorough clean.
Vapour Process
To complete the vapour degreasing the basket containing the components is moved over a secondary sump of heated solvent. This time heated to a higher temperature of 50°C to 100°C to boil the solvent into a vapour form. The vapour is three to four times heavier than air.
Once the solvent is in vapour form, it is retained in the tank with cold coils that are fitted to the upper internal surface (above the basket). Any vapour that reaches this point would condense back into a liquid because of the change in temperature, falling back down into the sump tank. As this allows the solvent to be reused repetitively, it is known as a closed-loop process.
When the vapour comes into contact with the surface of the components it condenses, dissolving the remaining contaminants such as oils & grease away. This process would continue until the components reach the same temperature as the vapour thus, heat the components to a temperature where they can dry by themselves without the intervention of additional drying machinery.
Modern Vapour Degreasing
Vapour degreasing and solvents have changed considerably over the past decades. Once the most popular approach to cleaning components vapour degreasing use reduced as concerns for the o-zone layer were found to be related to the usage of none environmentally friendly solvents. Particular solvents such as trichloroethylene were heavily restricted due to the concerns about their carcinogenic properties for operators. Soon after, as the result of further research and development, the solvents were allowed to be used again but under limited and controlled legislation restrictions.
Water-based degreasing increased in popularity during this period but there are disadvantages in comparison to vapour degreasing as it requires more treatment tanks and the processes take longer.
For industries like the aerospace industry, these allowances were a relief as the alternative water-based degreasing carried the threat of causing water corrosion to the metal.
In the last few years, advancements in solvents have resulted in a renewed interest in the process as the new solvents solutions & machinery have become more environmentally friendly.
