What is a Machine Press?

Machine Press

A machine press, or also known as a forming press, is a tool used in the manufacturing industry to deform a workpiece under high pressure. There are many different types of machine presses, but the defining characteristic of all machine presses is that they press a workpiece using high pressure in order to change the shape of a workpiece.

History of the Machine Press

Before the invention of the machine press, workers had to manually hammer metal by their bare hands to change its shape- this in turn was physically exhausting and ineffective when performed on strong and hard metals. The steam hammer was developed in the mid-1800s, and this was the early version of the modern-day machine press. The difference, as the name suggests, is that the steam hammer was powered by steam, and modern-day presses are powered by hydraulics.

How do Machine Presses Work?

The exact mechanics of machine presses vary depending on the type of machine press, most of them work by pressing a plate or die onto or against a workpiece. Once the workpiece is positioned underneath the machine press´s plate or die, the machine gets activated using hydraulic pressure, the machine press pushes the die or plate against the surface of the workpiece, and this causes the workpieces shape to deform. The hydraulic press machine makes the use of static pressure of the liquid to process metal, plastic, rubber, wood, and powder products. It is often used in pressing and pressing forming processes, such as forging press, stamping, cold extrusion, straightening, bending, flanging, sheet drawing, powder metallurgy, etc. Machine presses are able to deform most materials, including bronze, copper, aluminum, iron, steel and composites. The high pressure of a machine press squishes even the hardest metals, allowing manufacturing companies to deform metal workpieces into their desired shape.
