Why Use Perchloroethylene for Industrial Parts Cleaning?
What is Perchloroethylene (Perc)?
Perc is a colourless, non-flammable liquid that is primarily used for degreasing metals such as brakes, engines, and wire. It is used in industrial settings and also for cleaning fabrics. Perc was first produced in the United States as a by-product of carbon tetrachloride manufacture in the early 1900s. The first widespread use of perc was in the 1950s for the dry-cleaning industry. In the 1960s, the dry-cleaning industry accounted for about 90% of Perc consumption. Perc´s biggest peak was in the 1970s, and then its use and production decreased as it was classified as a hazardous waste by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Perc´s Uses and Benefits
When Perc is applied to a material or fabric, it helps dissolve greases, oils and waxes without damaging the fabric. When manufacturing metals, solvents that contain Perc clean and degrease new metal to help prevent impurities from weakening the metal. Percs high boiling point gives it a clear advantage in removing high melting point waxes and resins during vapor degreasing. Perc’s high boiling point is important for obtaining good penetration in metal parts with fine orifices or spot-welded seams. Perc is more stable than other chlorinated solvents, and it is perfectly suitable for metals such as aluminium, magnesium, zinc, brass and other alloys.
Perc has a high durability and it has the ability to adhere to plastics, metal, rubber and leather. Perc has also been used as an ingredient in a range of common products such as:
- Paint removers
- Glues
- Polishes
- Water repellents
- Lubricants
- Mould removers and anti-mould sealants
