Description

The Efco Heat treatments oven was originally commissioned for the aerospace industry for the heat treatment of steel and aluminium components. Its remit was to deliver rapid and complete processing of profile and batch components.

This automated heat treatment oven features a high-volume air system that brings the load to temperature quickly whilst providing exceptional uniformity throughout the chamber. A nominal ±5° C was specified on the original design plan across the normal operational range of 150-800°C. The result was an oven giving uniform processing and minimal wastage.

The programmable temperature controllers permit multiple, pre-programmed cycles which allow the operator to adjust the heat treatments process to the requirements of individual products. These pre-set programs also reduce the chance of operator error resulting in a scrapped load.

The process chamber has usable dimensions of 1000mm x 1300mm x 1000mm high and is insulated with up to 250mm thick ceramic fibre. The large Ø700mm air recirculation fan generates a nominal 250 cubic metres per minute of vertical air flow to give excellent uniformity within the chamber.

The access is gained through the singular front vertically opening pneumatically powered door nominally 1.6 x 1.75m high. The door is secured with pneumatically operated door clamps which pull the door towards the oven seal, ensuring minimal wear damage to the ceramic door seal and is further fitted with a heater interlock and door interlock safety system when the door is in the raised position.

Heating is supplied through a twin bank of 90kW incoloy sheathed elements distributed evenly along both sides of the chamber.

Total power requirements of 94kW

Original design specification of an approx weight of 250kg furnace charge is loaded automatically into the oven by a loading and unloading cart, which considerably accelerates and simplifies the heat treatments processing which increases productivity.

Loading Equipment

The loading system consists of two cross traverse trolleys, which are fitted in front of the oven to transfer the work pallets from the load/cool positions (either side of the oven) to the centre, ready for charging into the oven. A similar trolley transfers the work pallets into the oven.

The trolley is fitted with 4 pneumatic bellows to raise and lower the trolley

Each trolley is actuated by pneumatic cylinders, located at floor level.

The loading/unloading system is automatically controlled by the Eurotherm PC3000 system.

A Manual override system is provided for the loading/unloading and door operations. This manual system is not interlocked

All this results in minimal changeover times, operator efficiency and maximum oven usage.

Please note - we believe the semi automatic loading / unloading and cooling station lends itself very well to full PLC automation - TBC.
