Description
Chemical Process Ltd. Nitric Acid Fume Scrubber.
System Operation
- A common start icon on the HMI starts the system. Touching the Start icon will initially start the duty recirculation pump (P101 or P102). Duty pump is selected on HMI. The pump starts and the switch on the variable area flow meter is made. At this point the extraction fan CF101 starts. If the contact is not made on the flow meter then the system alarms and the fan does not start.
- Once the system is running then any loss in recirculation flow will automatically switch from duty to standby pump and give an alarm at the panel. If both pumps fail then the fan remains running to ensure that fume is still extracted from the process lines.
- There are 2 sets of buoyancy level switches in the scrubber base tank.=
- Set 1 gives LLL level and HHH level. LLL level should alarm and switch off the duty pump but override any auto pump changeover on low flow. HHH level gives a visual and audible alarm for base tank high level.
- The second level switch will maintain the water level in the base tank. LL level will open valve AV101 to fill the base tank and HH level will close AV101. AV101 is a pneumatically actuated fail safe close valve with switch box (mechanical contacts) Open and closed contacts are wired back to the panel. Failure of the valve to open or close on HH or LL should give an alarm on the HMI.
- Periodically a small amount of the liquid in the base tank is ‘bled’ to drain to minimise solids build up. AV102 is operated on a user settable timer set on the HMI. The HMI should have an ‘off’ time in hours and an ‘on time’ in seconds. Typically the system is set to open for say 10 – 20 seconds every 8 hours but this needs to be checked and set during commissioning.
- The scrubbing liquor is dosed with sodium hydroxide from a 25 litre carboy. A drum lance is supplied for the drum which has an integral buoyancy level switch to indicate drum low level. Drum low level should give an alarm on the HMI.
- A PH probe is installed in the recirculation pipework controlled though a pH controller. A dosing pump transfers sodium hydroxide to the scrubber on low PH.
Typically we would replicate the 4 – 20ma pH reading from the controller through the PLC and then use this to allow the operator to set dosing points and dosing times. The dosing pump is set up in ‘pause mode’ and on demand a signal is sent back to the pump to start and stop.
- It is possible to set up the PH controller and dosing pump to operate independently but the preferred option is through the PLC and HMI.
- The system is set through a set up screen. A low PH value is set to start the dosing pump and a dosing ‘on time’ and ‘off time’ set on the screen. At low PH the dosing pump starts and runs for the ‘on time’. The pump will then pause for the duration of the ‘off time’ to allow the solution to mix. Once the ‘off time’ period is timed out the PH signal is read and if the PH is still below the set point then the dosing sequence is repeated. A set point for base tank ‘high’ and ‘low’ PH should be included on the HMI. These set points will give alarm indication for either failure of the dosing system or overdosing of sodium hydroxide.
