Lifting off with Romer Ovens for Aviation Composite Manufacture

Lifting off with Romer Ovens for Aviation Composite Manufacture

A chance encounter with Rockwood Composites at their eye-catching 2023 Advanced Engineering stand led us to their production engineering using a Romer Composite Oven.

Aside from an opportunity to hear some positive feedback, it was exciting to see a Romer Oven supplied by Riley Surface World integral to the fabrication of critical, aviation grade components.

Composite ovens like our Romers include a temperature management system to keep the chamber within process tolerance and record performance, essential features for manufacturing components of this quality for the aviation sector.

The benefits of the ThPID system go further than great uniformity, with the managed power use reducing operating costs.

What is the Oven Used for Now?

Used for manufacturing Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) propellers, Rockwood uses the Romer oven to cure advanced pre-preg materials and components for making these specialist propellers. The oven plays a crucial role in altering the propeller components from their uncured state to enhancing their properties to be strong and durable while remaining lightweight.

Composites in the Aerospace Industry

One of the biggest industries to embrace the benefits of composites is the aerospace industry, which has been using composites for over 40 years. Their superior properties influencing some of the biggest advances in the aerospace design we see today.

As one of the most recognised composites, carbon fibre is one of the most frequently used composites throughout aerospace; its lightweight and robust properties lend it perfectly to components within an aircraft to minimise the total weight. Meanwhile, more specialised composites, such as radar-absorbing substances, are applied to the exterior of stealth aircraft to avoid radar detection.

With so many composite materials and substances, it's no wonder the aerospace industry is one of the most advanced.

How Can Our Ovens Contribute to Your Aerospace Process?

Romer Composite ovens are available from stock in our warehouse with commonly requested dimensions for rapid deployment. Additionally we offer a design and build service for size and features, including vacuum manifolds, to suit your process and application.
