Applications of Curing Ovens
A chemical process well integrated into the manufacturing of various components and substances across industries, curing is an irreversible process used to bring out the optimum properties of compound materials. This could include hardening the components for maximum durability to create substances with an adhesive strength that rivals other alternatives.
As suppliers of curing ovens for all the following applications, continue reading to learn more about the full capabilities of our curing ovens.
What is a Curing Oven?
Curing ovens, like the industries and processes they serve vary considerably in specification. To most industries, a curing oven has a maximum temperature of around 200°C with accuracy and uniformity at cost effective levels.
Other common features of curing ovens include:
- Circulated, Forced Airflow - For even heat distribution.
- Specified Controllers- Pre-set programs to run time after time.
- Large Internal Chamber- To cater to potentially large component moulds and/or batches of product during production.
- Vacuum Pump and Ports - In the composite industry to control the pressure of vacuum bags (used commonly in manufacturing pre-preg composite components)
Polymer/Composite Curing
Curing composites starts with combining a minimum of two components: a fibre and a matrix. As the structural feature of the composite, the fibre material is saturated in the matrix before curing to hold the component's form, shape or structure. The matrix typically consists of a thermoset substance such as epoxy resin, polydicyclopentadiene and polyimide.
It isn’t viable in a production environment to wait 7-10 days for thermoset resins to cure at ambient temperature. Hence, curing ovens are crucial to reducing curing time and optimising the process for better material properties.
Considering its requirement for low temperatures below 200°C, the precision required of the ovens typically requires a temperature uniformity of +/-10°C. A precision that is further refined for high precision industries such as aviation, as the demand for a +/-5°C temperature uniformity complies with AMS2750, AS9100 & NADCAP standards.
Adhesive Curing
Another curing process used universally in a range of industries, adhesive curing is one of the critical stages that alters the state of an adhesive substance. Removing the moisture to harden a liquid to a solid, the curing time depends on the time it takes for the moisture to evaporate. A time that is significantly reduced with the use of a curing oven.
Used primarily for curing structural adhesives, curing ovens are most commonly used for adhesives containing epoxy, phenolic and polyurethane, producing substances most known for their strong adhesive properties. These high-tack adhesives can bond components and parts from medical devices and machines to act as a welding alternative in fabrication.
Curing these substances occurs in a forced air circulation oven, noticeably featuring a horizontal or combined airflow pattern for an even heat distribution between the layers of adhesive materials. As the substances are in a liquid state before curing, the laboratory and industrial ovens used tend to feature many shelving options to cater to high volumes of trays that could be used in one batch process.
Powder Coating Curing
Powder coating is a surface treatment to enhance a component's aesthetic and surface functionality. Used for increasing the durability and resistance of the component surface, complete with a clean and professional finish. A curing oven is a must when curing these layers as it's required to harden the coating and achieve optimum durability.
The process of curing powder coating melts the powder to form a film around the component, additionally strengthening the bonds and adhesion to the component as it cures.
A forced air circulation oven is the go-to oven for curing these coatings. The airflow is able to reach all potentially tricky areas of the components for a thorough heat application. Furthermore, depending on the components, a gravity convection oven with only a natural airflow inside the oven can be an excellent alternative for delicate components while keeping the machinery costs low.
Paint Curing
In line with the most common purpose of an industrial oven to remove moisture, wet paint curing is precisely that. Heated to a low temperature, the moisture evaporates from the wet paint mix coating the component, strengthening the bonds as it's removed.
Wet paint curing is one example of a process suitable for conveyor ovens for a continuous batch process. This can be via overhead conveyors moving hanging parts slowly through a tunnel oven or using supermarket-type mesh conveyors.
The most in demand option for curing painted components is with an air circulated oven, typically taking 20 to 30 minutes at a temperature of up to 200°C. The heated air inside the chamber ensures the painted component, no matter the complexity of the shape, is fully cured.
