Key Features to Find the Composite Oven for You
As part of our series of articles looking into the importance of composites and how they benefit so many of today’s industries, we are finally looking into how to key features that make up a composite oven.
The specification of the ovens used to cure composites should match the specification of the composite components and quality of the finished product. Generally, the lower to specification the lower the cost to acquire an oven to suit.
Key features of a composite curing oven include air supply system, accurate temperature control, data acquisition system, heat up rate and vacuum system.
Air Supply
Referring to the air ducts and airflow within the oven, it’s the air itself that is heated and distributed throughout the oven for an even and steady temperature. As the heat would naturally gather at the top of the oven, a high volume of airflow is necessary to retain an accurate temperature across the oven chamber. Forcing the heated air through multiple air ducts located at the sides of the oven and prevent dead spots of unheated areas.
Temperature Control & Data Acquisition
With precision key to composites the an oven must have a tight temperature uniformity, often referred to as +/- 3°C or +/- 5°C.
As some composites require a curing journey of various temperatures so having a system to accurately manage it is critical.
A good example of this is our SNOL 350°C Industrial Oven Range as all these ovens are fitted with an Omron E5CC Programable Temperature controller & Solid State Relay (SSR) heating power control. Giving the user accurate control of the heating profile.
If the processes these ovens carry out need to be documented a data recorder is allowing process data to be stored and analysed in reports. On these reports, it would document each cycle by its own identification number, noting any alarms or anomalies that occurred.
Vacuum System
Some specialised composite ovens include manifolds for vacuum pumps allowing control of the presume inside the oven, or more likely withing a bag vacuum bag. Many composites are cured with a vacuum bagged product prepared for prior to loading into the oven.
Summary
Designed to quicken the production rates of composite curing, these ovens are highly beneficial machines that can be essential depending on the composites. Mostly used for composites made by the methods of vacuum bag or prepreg (when the reinforcement materials of the composite are in a woven mat form), the quality of these products wouldn’t be attainable without this equipment.
