The Return of the Bronze Age
Bronze used to be the hardest, most durable metal available to civilization. The mechanical properties of bronze enabled the creation of better tools, sharper weapons, and stronger structures- this was the bronze age.
Bronze Composition and Properties
- Bronze is a metal with a deep reddish-brown color, and golden polish.
- Bronze is a metal allow that primarily contains coper and 12% tin; it also contains additional elements such as zinc, phosphorus, aluminum, arsenic, and silicon to yield different properties. Bronze with 5% tin and 4% phosphorus has good elastic properties and is used for springs. Bronze with 10% tin and 0.5% phosphorus is used for bearing applications. Bronze with 10% tin and 2% zinc, is largely used for naval purposes- valves, pump bodies, and fittings of water and steam.
- Melting point of 950°C
- More fusible than copper and easier to cast
- Resists corrosion (especially seawater corrosion due to the formation of an intrinsic, thing but tough adherent film of aluminum oxide)
- Highly ductile - better conductor of heat and electricity
- Expands when hardening from liquid to solid
- Anti-Spark: does not produce sparks when struck. It is often used to make tools for use in combustible environments
- Causes minimal friction, making it highly useful for machine parts and other applications that involve metal-on-metal contact, such as gears.
The distinct characteristics of bronze make it suitable for use in functional and aesthetic applications, such as:
- Marine and fishing - due to bronze's high corrosion resistance
- Electrical connectors and springs - bronze is suitable for electrical applications due to their excellent electrical conductivity.
- Bushings and bearings: bronze´s low metal to metal friction makes it suitable for high-stress environments, such as those experienced by bushings and bearings.
- Sculptures and musical instruments: its dull gold tone make it a popular source material for bells, cymbals and sculptures.

Bronze Line for Sale
Riley Surface World currently has several plating lines sometimes suitable for bronze plating in our Electroplating Plant Catalogue
Additionally Riley Surface World is always keen to hear from anyone with redundant plating plants, or any large surface treatment plant. Often it can be reused elsewhere returning funds to the seller and reducing the considerable waste involved in scrapping plant.
Jacquet Weston Engineering Packaged Demineralisation Water Treatment Plant
