What is Calcination?

Calcination is the process of heating a solid material in an oven or furnace in order to cause the chemical separation of its components. The chemical separation can be so diverse that it lends itself to the chemical removal of crystalline water, removal of contaminants from the source material, thermal decomposition, and even phase changes; it is sometimes considered a process of purification. Calcination is done in the absence of air or a limited supply of air and normally takes place at temperatures below the melting point of the product materials. Calcination usually takes place in ovens, furnaces, or reactors of various designs including rotary kilns and shaft furnaces. The process of calcination helps industrial producers control end product characteristics, minimize contamination in waste materials and much more.

The Process of Calcination

Calcination centres around heating a substance under a controlled temperature and controlled environment. Calcination occurs when the material is brought to a temperature at which one or more components chemically separate into more basic building blocks. This results in the oxidation of a target component, removal of a volatile component or organic matter, chemical dehydration or decomposition of carbonates.

Calcination Ovens

The purpose of calcination ovens is to create a phase change or remove moisture; the function of a calcining oven is to heat solid materials to ores to induce phase transition, or to remove a volatile fraction or crystalline water as water vapour.

Examples of calcination processes include the following:

  • Decomposition of hydrated materials
  • Decomposition of carbonate minerals
  • Decomposition of volatile matter
  • Heat treatment to effect phase transformations
  • Removal of ammonium ions
  • Defluorination of uranyl fluoride to create uranium dioxide and hydrofluoric acid gases.
