Why do you Need an Oven for Powder Coating?
To be able to understand why an oven is needed for powder coating, we need to understand the process of powder coating and why it is used.
What is Powder Coating?
Since its introduction in the 1960s, powder coating has become one of the essential aspects of the surface finishing industry. It is seen as a process associated with high-end finishes for its durability and cost-effectiveness. A multistage process made up of three fundamental steps of preparation, application and curing, and its suitable for metal and non-metal substrates.
What are the Benefits of Powder Coating?
In comparison to liquid coatings, powder coating is most known for the durable finish it offers, with many more benefits such as:
- Achieves specialised finishes
- More environmentally friendly
- Faster turnaround time
- Lower material costs
- Long lasting
- High resistance to impact, moisture, chemicals & wear
- Protects against corrosion
- More consistent colour
- Thicker coating
How to Apply a Powder Coating Finish?
Preparation
Before the application of powder coating can be applied, the surface of the substrate needs to be prepared. Meaning the surface needs to be fully cleaned of any dust, dirt and debris as any remaining residue would disrupt the adhesion of the coating resulting in imperfections and tainting the final finish.
There can be many steps to achieving a suitable standard of cleanliness depending on the condition of the component to start with. This can include machinery for cleaning, rinsing, blasting and drying. The processes can include dipping the parts in weak alkaline solutions and neutral detergents in machine lines made up of dip tanks and wash stations.
Application of Paint
The parts now cleansed; the powder coating material can be applied.
Determined by the equipment for the application there are two main methods to apply powder coating, Electrostatic Deposition (ESD) & Fluidised bed powder coating. A spray booth with an electrostatic spray gun would be used for ESD, where the static charge from the gun would result in the powder coating sticking to the part. While fluidised bed powder coating would dip the (preheated) parts into the powder material in a fluidised bed.
Curing
This is when our industrial ovens are essential as both applications require a heating element. For the powder coats to cure, they need to reach a temperature (between 160°C to 240°C) to be able to melt and flow together, resulting in a consistent film layer coating the surface.
For ESD, the parts would go into the curing oven after application to achieve this. The time and temperature to process it determined by the size, shape and thickness of the part. Alternatively for fluidised bed powder coating applications, this heat treatment can take place before or after the application. If the item has been preheated prior to dipping, then the internal temperature of the part come dipping would be hot enough to cure the powder material. Therefore an oven is still required, just a bit earlier in comparison to ESD.
As a heating element is fundamental to powder coating, a curing oven is required as the finish would not be able to cure without it. Preventing the finish from taking on the durable qualities powder coating is used for.
