What is Wet Blasting?
Wet blasting is an abrasive cleaning method that uses media, compressed air and liquid to enhance the levels of a surface finish, achieving a smoother and more consistent finish. Wet blasting was developed in the early fifties; it was found that there was an even flow across the surface when using wet blasting systems. This caused less damage to the substrate and any abrasive action was consistent across the whole surface.
Why Use Wet Blasting?
- Reduction of dust: The main advantage of wet blasting is that it reduces the amount of dust produced by the abrasive blasting process, which in turn protects the operative, working parties and any dust sensitive plant from fine abrasive particulates.
- Hydrostatic forces: The presence of water means that there is more mass at the point of impact, and it could also mean less abrasive is required.
- Cleaning: Depending on the type of wet blasting, the surface can be polished and cleaned simultaneously.
- Can help reduce media use: As water is added to the wet blaster will reduce the amount of media use depending on the substrate being blasted and how strong the contaminant is adhering to the surface.
- Produces a “softer finish”
- Reduced running costs: By adding water to the process, it gives users more control of the abrasive impact on the workpieces
- Environmentally friendly: Wet blasting is an attractive alternative to many surface treatments as the use of water improves the operator environment by eliminating any dust or the need for large filtration systems supplied to reduce the amount of waste from the process.
Wet Blasting Applications
- Cleaning of dies and moulds
- Removal of paint, rust, scale, carbon and similar deposits
- Surface preparation before bonding, re-painting, and re-coating
- Satin finishing of stainless steel and other metals
- Cleaning of PCBs and electrical connectors
- Removal of small burrs from manufactured components
- Blasting in environments that must remain dust free
Types of Wet Blast Systems
- Manual Systems: typically, cabinets with glove ports that allow the operator to position or turn the part of the product being blasted
- Automated Systems: parts are moved through the system mechanically on a conveyor belt, turntable, spindle, rotary indexer or tumble barrel.
- Robotic Systems: programmable surface finishing systems that allow users to repeat complex processes with maximum precision and minimal labour.
A wet blasting system can be a good option in certain applications; its greatest benefits are the ability to reduce dust that is created by blasting as well as the potential to provide a cleaner surface while potentially using fewer media.
