Important Factors to Consider for A Blasting Cabinet
A blast cabinet lets you blast an object under high pressure in a fully enclosed environment- this type of resurfacing comes with numerous advantages. Sandblast cabinets can consist of complete blasting machines or abrasive blast packages reconfigured with the required components.
Importance of CFM (Cubic Force per Minute)
The most important factor in deciding which cabinet is needed is the CFM, or cubic force per minute. The CFM indicates the force behind the air and media coming out of the blasting hose. The CFM is created using an external air compressor and the right CFM will assure the blasting cabinet will work.
Volume of Dust Collection
Dust collection for a sandblast cabinet can range anywhere from a vacuum up to a large high volume reverse pulse dust collection. If the plan is to blast more than a few minutes at a time or will be blasting any contaminant that will create a lot of dust, a dust collector is usually a good consideration. How large the dust collector is offered is also important- the right dust collector will depend on the size of the blast cabinet and the amount of dust that will be created. How the dust is collected and how large the dust collector is important to consider.
- Bag house: Using a bag house to collect dust produced by the sandblast cabinet is the least expensive but requires stopping your sandblasting to empty the dust.
- Manual Controlled Pulse Collector: Relies on the operator to stop blasting or push a button on the unit to create a forceful flow back air which will purge the dust collector filters of any dust that accumulates in them- the dust is deposited into a collection drum or similar container.
- Automatic Reverse Pulse Dust Collector: Blows air back through the dust cartridge at a given time. This solution allows for medium to non-stop production because the collector automatically clears itself of dust build-up at an appropriate time.
Construction of the Cabinet
A high-quality cabinet will be constructed of solid material- steel is a great choice because it is sturdy, lasts a long time and is very durable. The legs of the cabinets have to be welded properly for them to be stable.
Cabinet Sealing: Make sure there are no leaks. A sealed cabinet ensures that dust and debris will not exit the cabinet.
Amount of Water it Uses: The amount of water that is used depends on the size of the hydro blasting cabinet. Most hydro blasting cabinets won´t need a drain nearby; set up to recycle and collect the water they use. Smaller hydro blasting cabinets only take about two gallons of water and large hydro blasting cabinets require 25 gallons of water to operate.
Propulsion Technology: Suction or Direct Pressure Blast Cabinet?
Suction sand blasters suit most applications, and are ideal for low production operations, light duty cleaning and occasional maintenance jobs.
Pressure blast cabinets provide faster cleaning rates, and are much more powerful- they are used for larger volume applications and aggressive blast cleaning.
Wet blasting cabinets use water as well as air. Like dry blasting cabinets, they use different technology to propel the media with a cost/performance trade off. Wet blasting cabinets produce less dust, give a different finish and can clean parts.
Viewing Window for the Operator
Being able to see the component being blasted is important. The physical design of the machine, size of the window, quality of glass window and lighting all impact the view and operator comfort.
A wet blasting cabinet may come with a window wiper to clear away water or media blocking the view.
Type of Media
Not all cabinets are suitable for all types of media, and there are many types of media. This can be as simple as the quality of construction not being able to handle the abrasive nature of the media. The force generated by the cabinet will also define if it is effective for the media being used as will the efficiency of the dust extraction.
Which media to be used will be largely defined by the process needed such as removing dirt, deburring, blasting paint or adding the final finish texture.
Accessories for Blast Cabinet
- Cyclone: Can be used to have a further stage of cleaning and media separation before the dust extraction- this is beneficial on dusty applications that are proven to clog traditional dry dust filters.
- Nozzle bracket and basket: Can be an ideal upgrade to any blast cabinet; they allow the operator two handed manipulations of parts directly in front of the nozzle. This can be useful on small, difficult to handle parts in high production applications. Brackets also reduce operator fatigue and the nozzle can be positioned at any angle and location inside the enclosure.
